JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Although gas prices have recently dropped from their record highs last year,
American motorists should continue to reduce fuel consumption to conserve gas
resources, keep the costs down and aid the environment, reports Cheapest in
Florida, one of the state’s oldest traffic schools. To accomplish this, it
provided a series of recommendations (some courtesy of Kelly Blue Book):
- Gas is more dense when it is colder outside and you are
charged for gasoline based on volume rather than density.
Purchase gas in the morning when it is coolest.
- Use regular gasoline unless the vehicle requires higher-grade
fuels (consult the owner’s manual. Up to 25 cents per gallon can be
achieved by doing so and higher grade fuels deliver little or no
performance boost to engines designed to run on lower grades.
- Use a fuel additive to clean fuel injectors. This will save on
gas consumption.
- Rolling down the window will hurt gas mileage by interrupting
the aerodynamic airflow around your car. Lowering the air conditioning
volume and temperature controls will save more. Once the interior
has cooled down, recirculate the air from inside the car.
- Check tires and air filter monthly. Keep tires inflated to
the specifications provided in the owners’s manual and replace
the air filter when it is dirty.
- Accelerate slowly and smoothly and brake gently and evenly.
Begin to decelerate a half-block ahead of the stopping point whenever
possible.
- Driving at the lowest and safest speed that is legal and safe
can save significantly on gas.
- At higher speeds on the open freeway or highway, set the cruise
control to a reasonable speed. Eliminate unnecessary acceleration
and deceleration.
- Consider buying a hybrid or other high mileage car. This will
save money in fuel costs.
